Self-drive tips for Namibia
On the road
- Namibia drives on the left.
- Most roads are gravel. Keep your speed down, around 80 km/h, as most accidents happen on gravel.
- Avoid driving after dark: wildlife and livestock wander onto the roads.
- Distances are long. Fill up with fuel whenever you can, and carry water and snacks.
Your vehicle
- A 4×4 is strongly recommended, and is essential for some areas, such as the final stretch to Deadvlei.
- Check your spare tyres before you leave. Many rental vehicles carry two.
- Choose full insurance cover, including tyres and windscreens.
- Crossing into Botswana or Zambia needs written permission from the rental company. We arrange this for you.
Documents and money
- Bring your driving licence. If it is not in English, you will also need an International Driving Permit.
- Cards work in towns and most lodges and fuel stations, but carry some cash for remote areas.
In the parks
- Etosha’s gates open at sunrise and close at sunset. Plan to be inside your camp or out of the park before the gates close.
- Stay in your vehicle in the parks, except at marked areas.
- Book park camps and lodges well ahead, especially for July to October.
Best time for a self-drive safari
Namibia can be visited year-round, but each season offers a different experience.

Frequently asked questions
Is Namibia safe for a self-drive holiday?
Yes. Namibia is one of the safest and easiest countries in Africa for a self-drive trip. The main risks are on the road itself, so drive slowly on gravel and avoid driving at night.
Do I need a 4×4?
We strongly recommend one. Many roads are gravel, and some areas, such as the sand track to Deadvlei, need a 4×4. It also gives you more comfort and safety on long drives.
How long are the driving days?
We plan most days at around 3 to 6 hours of driving, with stops along the way, and we avoid back-to-back long days wherever possible.
How many days do I need?
At least 10 to 11 days for the main highlights. Two weeks lets you add Sossusvlei, Fish River Canyon or the Zambezi Region without rushing.
Can I combine Namibia with Chobe and Victoria Falls?
Yes. The Zambezi Region links easily with Chobe in Botswana and Victoria Falls. Our Go Wild route ends close to Chobe, and we can extend any route to Victoria Falls.
What if something goes wrong on the road?
Your rental vehicle comes with roadside assistance, and your route notes include all the emergency numbers you need. We are also a message away throughout your trip.
