There are few wildlife encounters in Africa as memorable as standing just a short distance from a wild rhinoceros.

Recently, we spent a morning in Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park in Livingstone, joining a guided Rhino Game Drive Safari to experience one of Zambia’s most remarkable conservation success stories.

Located along the banks of the Zambezi River, Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park is the only national park in Zambia where visitors can reliably see white rhinos in their natural habitat. The park is also home to elephants, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, warthog, impala, puku and an impressive variety of birdlife.

An Early Morning Start

We entered the park shortly after sunrise when wildlife activity is at its peak. The cool morning air and golden light created perfect conditions for photography.

As we explored the park in an open 4×4 safari vehicle, we encountered several species including giraffes browsing among the trees, buffalo grazing in open areas, and zebra moving through the grasslands.

The real highlight, however, was yet to come.

Walking with Rhinos

One of the most unique aspects of this safari is the guided rhino tracking experience.

Accompanied by experienced guides and wildlife officers, we left the vehicle and continued on foot. Tracking rhinos in their natural environment is an entirely different experience from viewing wildlife from a vehicle.

Every sound becomes important. Every footprint tells a story.

When we finally located the rhinos, we were able to observe them calmly grazing while learning about the conservation efforts that protect these endangered animals.

Watching a white rhino from ground level is a humbling experience and a reminder of why wildlife conservation remains so important across Africa.

A Photographer’s Paradise

For photographers, Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park offers excellent opportunities to capture wildlife in beautiful natural light.

The combination of open grasslands, riverine scenery and close wildlife encounters makes this one of the best short safari experiences available from Livingstone and Victoria Falls.

Whether you’re using a professional camera or simply your smartphone, you’ll leave with unforgettable images and memories.
